What is expected of participants?

Participants should be independent and motivated individuals who can adapt to the challenges of working, both alone and as part of a team, in a different cultural environment.

Each CSIH part receives a grant to cover placement - related expenses (see below), as well as living expenses during the placement.  All other expenditures are the responsibility of the placement.

Once selected as an participant, you will be asked to sign a letter of agreement that outlines your responsibilities before, during, and after the placement.

Before the internship the intern must:
-       arrange for and purchase the plane ticket to the country of the internship;
-         arrange for and acquire all necessary visas for travel;
-         arrange for and acquire all necessary travel, medical, and life insurance before departure;
-         arrange for and receive all required
medicals, vaccinations and medications required for the host country (a travel medicine clinic must be consulted for up-to-date information on medical precautions for travel);
-         in consultation with the host organization representatives, arrange for accommodation in the host country;
-         complete the necessary forms required for CSIH and sponsoring agencies.

CSIH provides assistance if difficulties are encountered during the preparation time. All participants are in touch with CSIH via email and telephone on a daily or weekly basis during the departure preparation time.

CSIH provides briefing materials to each participant, including brochures, pamphlets, instruction sheets, and other useful information on adapting to life in a new country.

CSIH maintains a contact list of all former participants and new participants are put in contact with those who have returned from the same country or region.

All participants must attend a briefing session prior to departure.

All participants are given emergency contact numbers where CSIH can be reached 24 hours a day during the time of their placement.

After the placement, participants receive debriefing materials, including a free one-year membership in CSIH, and are kept up-to-date on CSIH activities, job opportunities, conferences of interest, and training programs.

The CSIH annual Canadian Conference on International Health showcases the program and provides opportunities for selected participants to make presentations on their placement, as well as network with top international health professionals.

Other details are outlined in the participant's letter of agreement and acceptance forms.
