CIDA internships offer post-secondary graduates the opportunity to gain valuable international development work experience. The program is part of the international stream of the federal government's Youth Employment Strategy (YES) which aims to help young people make the school-to-work transition.       

To be eligible for these placements, candidates must:

1. Be a citizen or permanent resident of Canada between 19 and 30 years of age.
2. Be unemployed or underemployed prior to the placement.
3. Be available for 6 to 9 months.
4. Be in good health and undertake to obtain appropriate immunizations and arrange for travel/health/life 
    insurance as well as to arrange travel to the host country and satisfy all visa requirements.
5. Have the appropriate education, training or expertise (see internship listings for specific criteria) and have
    completed a post-secondary degree or diploma.
6. Demonstrate an interest in international issues and openness to different cultures and situations.
7. Not have previously participated in a Career Focus placement of the Youth Employment Strategy program (YES).

ENA represents over 1000 nurses in Ethiopia. This project, in partnership with CNA and supported by CIDA , aims to strengthen the association, establish nursing legislation, standardize nursing education, develop a system for home-based care services for HIV/ AIDS and develop nursing research towards the aim of enhancing health services. 

Job Description

The intern would be working in the ENA office alongside a project manager and administrative assistant. The executive committee members are active on the project and attend planning meetings and contribute to the day to day functioning of the association. The position is based in Addis Ababa; however the intern would be required to visit branch associations on some occasions. The intern would be provided with a computer and would be in shared office space.

The intern’s responsibilities will be to continue the work initiated by the previous Health Programmer. This largely includes data collection from survey administration, data analysis and maintenance. ENA is governed primarily on a voluntary basis, so the intern can contribute much to the office administration, whereas requests are presented by the ENA executive members.

 

a)       Complete a needs-assessment of nurses’ skills and understanding of HIV/ AIDS (universal precautions, clinical care, and stigma recognition):

·         Lead the development of a participatory survey (different methodologies for data collection to be used, including questionnaires, observation, interviews, focus groups);

·         Coordinate the implementation of the survey (Administer the survey to nurses in hospitals and clinics, in both rural and urban settings);

·         Summarize results of survey prepare a report (describe the objectives and analyze the results);

b)       Assess the nursing profession management of HIV/AIDS:

·         Ability to discuss subject matter (in general, with patients),

·         Levels of knowledge (MTCT, anti-retroviral drug adherence etc),

·         Mandate the incorporation of the collected data into a useable resource for future projects (e.g. grant/proposal writing, policy change advocacy, etc.)

d)       Identify existing materials to support ENA’s education activities.

·         Organize a working system to manage existing educational materials for ENA (e.g. create an inventory of in-office supplies including books, posters, etc). 

·         Develop materials for training activities being undertaken by ENA during the period of the internship.

·         Develop new educational materials or techniques that meet the identified needs of the organization for future events or requests.

e)   Identify with the staff, areas for capacity development support to ENA staff in project implementation.

Through regular consultation with ENA committee members, identify and provide support to building, where appropriate, desired organizational and / technical skills.  This may include human resource development in the office, and the process of equipping individuals with the understanding, skills, and access to information, knowledge and training that enable them to perform effectively. Where organizational / technical needs fall beyond the parameters of intern skill-base, the development of a contingency plan will be supported.

Ekwendeni Hospital provides hospital care and PHC for the Ekwendeni catchment area, population 55,000.  The SFHC project has a mandate to use a participatory approach to improve food security through improvements in food production.  PATH Canada’s mandate is to improve health, especially the health of women and children, in developing regions of the world.

The SFHC project promotes the adoption of organic matter technologies such as intercropping grain or perennial legumes with maize, as an alternative fertilize and food source for resource-poor farmers in Malawi.  The SFHC project works in a participatory manner to promote these technologies and test their effectiveness at improving household food security and nutrition.

Job Description

The intern will be a member of the SFHC team with specific responsibilities in assisting a nutrition education program, and in monitoring the programs effectiveness. 

In particular, the intern will:

 ·         Monitor the progress of the nutrition program through observation and participation in the Agriculture and Nutrition Discussion Clubs;

 ·         Assist with ongoing surveys on food security and nutrition;

 ·         Manage and analyze health survey data.

The intern will spend time at the PATH Canada office only for orientation and debriefing.  As much time as possible will be spent in Malawi.

Migrant women will likely include a sample of students, factory workers, domestic workers, housekeepers, and nannies, beer-promotion girls, street hawkers and food sellers, and sex workers.

Under the overall supervision of the Ho Chi Minh City-based Chief Migration Health Physician, the intern will have the following duties:

·         Develop a framework and implement an assessment or baseline study on gender-based violence amongst migrant populations

·         Develop a strategy for IOM which describes the direction and approach for programmes addressing gender-based violence

·         Collaborate and liaise with U.N agencies, other international organisations, non-governmental & governmental organisations, agencies and entities on migration-health related matters, especially gender-based violence

1.       Conducting research on the impact of trafficking on physical and mental health of trafficked persons;

2.       Conducting research into the public health concerns associated with human trafficking;

3.       Drafting project proposals focusing on prevention of human trafficking, provision of services to trafficked persons (with a focus on health services), and at mitigating the public health impact of human trafficking);

4.       Developing training curriculum on human trafficking and related health impacts (including HIV) for health care providers, government officials, and other relevant service providers;  and,

5.        Assist in the implementation of the Kenya counter trafficking projects with focus on the impact of human trafficking on trafficked person(s) physical and mental health.
