The
International Health Young Professionals Placement Program (YPPP) assists young
Canadian graduates and others interested in international health to obtain
overseas work experience and/or contribute as a volunteer to health and
development initiatives abroad.
Acting as a coordinator, CSIH receives
proposals from host organizations and announces selected
placements
for which young Canadians may apply. Applications are screened by the YPPP
Advisory Committee and approved candidates are presented to the host
organization for final selection.
The
Canadian Society for International Health (CSIH) created its Youth Internship
Program
in June 1997 when the federal governments Youth Employment Strategy (YES) came into being. Placements
have traditionally been under YES and funded by
the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), Industry Canada's NetCorps
Canada International Program, and the Department of Foreign Affairs
and International Trade (DFAIT).
The name of the program was changed to Young Professionals Placement Program in
2006 to better reflect the nature of placements and changing objectives and
priorities.
Sponsors for the program have been CIDA, Industry Canada in association with CIDA, Health Canada
and HealthBridge (in the 2007 - 2008 period).
The
Youth Employment Strategy expired at the end of the government's fiscal year
2007. YPPP currently has no placements available. This webpage will be
updated as new funding for placements is secured. Prospective young
professionals should check this site periodically for new opportunities.
However, it is not expected that there will be any new recruitment until the
fall of 2008 at the earliest.
"I would like to thank NetCorps
and CSIH for giving me this wonderful opportunity to make a difference in
the lives of people who will someday be the brighter future of their
nations. So far, it has been the best experience in my 24 years of life. I
met some great people, made amazing friends, learned new languages,
developed sensitivity to new cultures and most of all discovered skills in
myself which I never knew about." - Noman Siddiqui, NetCorps
participant 2004-2005, Smiles Foundation, Dominican Republic
Placements
relate to
a wide range of health
issues (e.g. infectious diseases, HIV-AIDS, multicultural health, health
technology, reproductive health, primary health care, health economics,
teaching and awareness), as well as determinants of health (e.g. social
support networks, education, employment and working conditions, and work
environment). NetCorps placements
have an ICT (Information Communications Technology) component.
Health Canada placements are with multilateral international health
organizations such as WHO and IOM and are usually completed in head
offices in Geneva or Washington.
YPPP participants
gain program, cross-cultural communication, leadership and
technical skills in areas such as policy development, planning,
evaluation, research, delivery and management of health services and
programs.
Participants have their
travel paid for by CSIH and receive a modest stipend to cover their
expenses overseas.
