Canadian Physician Overseas Programme

The Canadian Physician Overseas Programme aims to enhance the clinical abilities of local health care workers and create sustainability in the health care systems of developing nations. We connect Canadian physician volunteers to overseas opportunities in the health care field as defined by the recipient hospitals and training centres. CPOP is run by Dr. Keith Martin, current Member of Parliament, previously an emergency room physician who worked overseas in southern Africa for many years.

The CPOP’s Howard Hospital project is currently seeking physician volunteers to serve short and long term placements at the Salvation Army Howard Hospital in Zimbabwe. See job description for more details.

Howard Hospital has 150 beds, serves a catchment area of more than 270,000 people and offers services in general medicine and surgery, maternity, and HIV/AIDS treatment and care. Total patient visits now exceed 155,000 each year. There are 3,000 operations and 2,500 deliveries annually.
