Launch of the Global Hepatitis C Network in Canada
The Canadian
Society for International Health (CSIH) is pleased to announce the launch of
the Global Hepatitis C Network in Canada. CSIH will be the Secretariat for this
initiative which is being funded by the
Public Health Agency of
Canada. The goal of the Network is to contribute to improved population
health through increased awareness and understanding in Canada and abroad of
issues related to the global hepatitis C epidemic with a focus on four key
areas: research and surveillance, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. The
Network will be a virtual meeting place and information exchange hub where the
global hepatitis C community can find information, share knowledge, and
collaborate. The Network will promote communication between organizations
delivering and/or receiving HCV (hepatitis C virus) programs around the world,
including those delivering HIV and hepatitis B interventions (NGOs, public
health agencies, academic institutions, and medical institutions, etc.) as well
as priority populations around the world (people infected with, affected by, at
risk of, or vulnerable to contracting HCV) to improve the effectiveness of the
Canadian and global responses to the pandemic. A Global HCV Working Group
comprised of a team of experts will help to guide the Network’s activities, and
will provide input for a knowledge bank of “who is doing what and where” and of
best practices to be shared through the Network. A Global Hepatitis C Network
website and newsletter will provide access to information on the key themes
(hepatitis C research and surveillance, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment)
along with information about hepatitis C programs worldwide, upcoming events,
and opportunities for engagement. A capacity building workshop will also be
organized for organizations and individuals in Canada and abroad interested in
and/or working in the area of hepatitis C.
