Global Hepatitis C Network in Canada
CSIH is the Secretariat for the Global Hepatitis C Network initiative which is being funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC). The goal of the Network is to contribute to improved population health through increased awareness and understanding in Canada and abroad of issues related to the global hepatitis C epidemic with a focus on four key areas: research and surveillance, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. The Network will be a virtual meeting place and information exchange hub where the global hepatitis C community can find information, share knowledge, and collaborate. The Network will promote communication between organizations delivering and/or receiving HCV (hepatitis C virus) programs around the world, including those delivering HIV and hepatitis B interventions (NGOs, public health agencies, academic institutions, and medical institutions, etc.) as well as priority populations around the world (people infected with, affected by, at risk of, or vulnerable to contracting HCV) to improve the effectiveness of the Canadian and global responses to the pandemic. A Global HCV Working Group comprised of a team of experts is helping to guide the Network’s activities, and will provide input for a knowledge bank of “who is doing what and where” and of best practices to be shared through the Network. A Global Hepatitis C Network website and newsletter will provide access to information on the key themes (hepatitis C research and surveillance, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment) along with information about hepatitis C programs worldwide, upcoming events, and opportunities for engagement. Capacity building workshops will also be organized for organizations and individuals in Canada and abroad interested in and/or working in the area of hepatitis C. World Hepatitis Day 2012We’re at it again! For the fourth consecutive year, CSIH with funding from PHAC will take the lead in organizing World Hepatitis Day activities across Canada. World Hepatitis Day is a global event that takes place annually on July 28th to increase awareness of viral hepatitis and its related chronic conditions. Worldwide, approximately 500 million people — one in 12 worldwide — are infected with chronic viral hepatitis B (350 million persons) or hepatitis C (130-170 million persons).[1] In Canada, an estimated 550,000 people have chronic hepatitis B or C, with many unaware of their status.[2] While treatment is available for hepatitis C, unlike hepatitis B, there is no vaccine for hepatitis C. Come be a part of the global response! Join the World Hepatitis Day in Canada Planning Committee and help spread the word on viral hepatitis! Contact Alison Marshall at 613-241-5785, ext. 303 or amarshall@csih.org to become involved. See http://www.whdcanada.ca/ for an overview of activities that took place for World Hepatitis Day in Canada 2011.
