Costs for ParticipantsAn international internship of six months’ duration under the GCGH program will cost participants between $10,000 and $15,000. Exact costs depend on the cost of living in the specific internship location, the kind of accommodation participants choose, and actual expenditures on travel. Washington (the location of PAHO Headquarters) and Europe (WHO and other international organizations) have very high costs of living compared to most low and middle income countries. Participants can reduce their costs by researching their own travel and using travel miles if they have them. The breakdown of probable expenditures is roughly: *Domestic Travel $1,000 International Travel $2,500 Accommodation and living expenses overseas $5,000 to $10,000 CSIH Administration $1,500 *Domestic travel is required in order to participate in pre-departure briefings, training and education in Ottawa and to take advantage of debriefing and networking opportunities after the internship. Costs vary according to a participants' home location and can be reduced by piggy-backing on international travel (timing and other circumstances permitting). There will be fewer short-term internship opportunities available due to the kind of assistance overseas partner organizations require and the time it takes for interns to become integrated and productive in their placements. When short-term placements of three months or less are feasible, the payment required to CSIH will be reduced to $1,000. Short-term interns will still be required to attend pre-departure briefings and undergo training in Ottawa in order to facilitate being able to meet the needs and objectives of both participants and host agencies. |
