Global Citizens for Global Health

Benefits of the Program for Participants

The core component of the GCGH program is the provision of valuable overseas work experience in high level, reputable, international health and development organizations. CSIH will work with its overseas partners to identify work opportunities as close as possible to the interests and career goals of applicants. We will then develop internship parameters designed to be equally beneficial to both parties. Participants and host agency representatives will sign letters of agreement outlining the expectations and responsibilities on both sides and CSIH will monitor placements to ensure that everyone’s objectives are met to the greatest extent possible.

In addition to identifying and arranging individually-tailored overseas work experience, CSIH will provide:

  • related education in global health;
  • assistance arranging travel and obtaining visas, work permits, vaccinations and health insurance;
  • cross-cultural training;
  • pre-departure country and professional briefings;
  • safety and security briefings;
  • assistance in identifying and securing suitable, affordable accommodation overseas, with the participation of partner/host organizations;
  • professional, expert mentorship and personal support throughout placements;
  • mediation with overseas partners/host agencies as required to ensure specific learning objectives are met;
  • professional, timely support in emergency situations;
  • assistance with reintegration to Canada and job search upon completion of placements;
  • the opportunity to share experiences and network with other health and development professionals in Canada through participation in conferences such as the Canadian Conference on Global Health.

CSIH interns are provided emergency contact information to enable them to contact a CSIH staff person 24 hours a day while outside of Canada. Upon return to Canada, GCGH interns receive debriefing kits, including materials to assist with their job search, and a free one-year membership in the Society. The CSIH annual Canadian Conference on Global Health (CCGH) showcases the contributions of interns and provides networking opportunities for those who attend. CSIH subsidizes returned interns to participate at CCGH whenever possible.
