November 5th 12:45 PM to 2:00 PM - YPPP Internship Symposium D. Kuczynski and S. Taleski, YPPP alumni and R. Elliott, Program Manager
Symposium Title: Facing Up To Change: A symposium on the Importance of Young Professional Placements in International Health Summary
International Youth Internship Programs and Young Professional Programs funded under the federal government’s Youth Employment Strategy have provided thousands of young Canadian health professionals with an introduction to international health and work experience ‘on the ground’ and with multilateral organizations such as the WHO. The Young Professionals Placement Program (YPPP) of CSIH has sent almost 400 young Canadians on placements around the world and launched nearly that many careers in international health and development. Such programs build capacity and partnerships with host organizations in developing countries and raise Canada’s international profile. They allow youth to witness the effects of global change on health and motivate them to action. But the Youth Employment Strategy is scheduled to end in March 2008. The ability of organizations like CSIH to implement young professional placements is very uncertain. What will the options be for youth engagement and on-the-ground training of international health professionals in April 2008 and beyond? This symposium will highlight some of the exciting ways YPPP placements are supporting CIDA’s development objectives and explore their future. Speakers will include past YPPP participants, representatives of host organizations, and others involved in YPPP programming and operations. (Speakers TBD).

Monday, November 5th at 17:30 hrs. - Advance Market Commitments (AMCs) initiative This information session will present the Advance Market Commitments (AMCs), an initiative to which Canada is participating and that has the potential to offer a powerful and cost-effective means to develop and introduce priority new vaccines against diseases that currently kill millions of children in developing countries each year. A pilot AMC has been designed for pneumococcal vaccines to demonstrate its impact on accelerating vaccine development, production scale-up, and introduction. Canada was the first country to announce a financial contribution to the AMC, which is a US$1.5 billion initiative of 6 donors. A presentation by selected guest speakers will be followed by a discussion and questions period. Guest speakers include Andrew Jones from the GAVI Secretariat to speak on the rationale for a AMC, Professor Fred Were from the Kenya Pediatric Association to speak on challenges on generating progress in child survival programs in the field, and Sue Szabo (Canadian Department of Finance) and Garry Aslanyan (Canadian International Development Agency) to present AMCs in the context of Canada's development assistance in the health sector.
