Global Health Research

Our globalized world presents many complexities, including growing health disparities between low and high-income countries, inequitable access to health care within countries, and increasingly interconnected health systems. CSIH recognizes the need for a global commitment to research in order to build knowledge that informs effective programming and policy to overcome global health inequities and achieve social development and justice.

Regrettably, there exists a ‘10/90 gap’ in global health research, where less than 10% of worldwide expenditure on health research is devoted to the health concerns of 90% of the world’s population in low and middle income countries. Millions of lives are lost each year due to inadequate resources being channeled into current global health and development research agenda. By creating spaces such as the Canadian Conference on International Health for the global health community to share knowledge and experiences, and by forging alliances with organizations working to promote an enhanced research agenda (see links below), CSIH is working to narrow the 10/90 gap.

Canadian Coalition for Global Health Research (CCGHR) [http://www.ccghr.ca] – CCGHR promotes equitable health worldwide by mobilizing Canadian investment in global health research, nurturing partnerships among Canadians and people in low and middle income countries, and turning research into action.

Global Health Research Initiative [http://www.cihr-irsc.gc.ca/e/13249.html] – The GHRI is a cooperative arrangement between the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Canadian International Development Agency, Health Canada, and the International Development Research Centre aimed at shaping and responding to the global health research agenda, influencing policy relating to global health research, and facilitating information-sharing among partner agencies.

Canadian Conference on International Health (CCIH) – The CCIH is convened annually by CSIH and aims to provide an opportunity for professionals working in international health, global health and public health to share knowledge and experience, and promote innovation and collaborative action among participants. Each year the CCIH aspires to define research questions and promote knowledge translation in relation to a timely theme.
