Elections - 2007
The Board of
Directors of the Canadian Society for International Health is pleased to
announce the election of a two new director’s and a new student representative
to the board for a two year term starting December 2007 to November 2009.
Dr. Ramotar is a Molecular Microbiologist at the Ottawa Hospital in the Division
of Microbiology and also has an academic appointment at the University of Ottawa
as an Associate Professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory
Medicine.
Dr. Ramotar's
primary function in his current job is to direct the molecular diagnostic and
genotyping service offered by the Division of Microbiology. Dr. Ramotar is
active in research and is currently part of a collaborative group studying
bio-films in pathogens infecting Cystic Fibrosis patients. His primary research
focus is molecular epidemiology of multi-resistant hospital acquired pathogens
and has published a number of papers in this area.
In 2004, he
further expanded his activities into the international health field by returning
to Guyana (where he was born and where he went to high school) as the principal
technical laboratory consultant for the Canadian Society for International
Health (CSIH) for the CIDA funded Public Health Strengthen in Guyana project.
Dr. Ramotar has
extensive expertise in the field of clinical diagnostic microbiology both in
terms of technical and operational knowledge. His expertise in this area was
instrumental in assisting in the implementation of diagnostic testing for TB and
STIs for the PHSG project in Guyana
He is active in various capacities in both the Canadian
Association of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (CACMID) and Association of
Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (AMMI-Canada)
Dr. Carol Valois is the Director of the Charles LeMoyne Family Care Unit and
Professor of Family Medicine at Sherbrooke University in Quebec. Dr. Valois has
been a family physician since 1984. She is a member of the board of director of
the Global Health Resource Group of the Association of Faculties of Medicine of
Canada. Dr. Valois has a passion for international health and has been building
electives and participating in clinical teaching in
Mali
for medical residents yearly since 1998. Dr. Valois brings a strong
francophone network of international health professionals to the Board and over
10 years of international health experience.
The Board of Directors of CSIH would like to thank everyone who was nominated
and ran for election. We would encourage you to get involved at CSIH by becoming
a member or through our various committees and our annual international
conference.
We would like to welcome Dr. Ramotar, Dr. Valois and Michelle Harvey-Blakenship
to the Board of Directors.
